# Is Elasticsearch mandatory in chef server 14.7.1?

I was wondering the same...? Is ES mandatory? It stick with 4GB of resident memory by default...

Yes, until 14.15.9 for external search engines where it can use OpenSearch  
The embedded search index install is natively OpenSearch only at 15.0.9 [Chef Infra Server Release Notes](https://docs.chef.io/release_notes_server/#new-features)
