Is there a set of standard startup scripts for running on the master?

Either a single /etc/init.d/chef, or one each for solr, expander, server and
server-webui

This is to be run on Centos 5 or RHEL 5

yes there is, if you install from rpm (rbel or elff) it will be installed
straight away (5 init scripts, chef-server, chef-expander, couchdb, rabbitmq
and chef-server-webui). If you install chef via gem you need to copy them
individually from /distro/redhat .
