Bento 201708.22.0 released

Greetings kitchen-vagrant and bento users!

We’re pleased to announce the release of the latest round of bento boxes. In addition to the being built with the latest set of virtualization tooling available we’ve made some noteworthy changes as part of this release.

New Platforms

  • Debian 9.1
  • Debian 8.9
  • FreeBSD 11.1

Automatically Update RHEL-ish Platforms
RHEL-like platforms now are updated yum update as part of the building process which brings them in line with other platforms already doing similar to ensure the most up-to-date boxes.

Versioning
As is probably evident, we’ve changed the versioning scheme used as traditional SemVer wasn’t terribly useful for boxes. We’ve taken a page from other projects and moved to a date based hybrid format YYYYMM.DD.PATCH as this lets us version boxes in a more meaningful way and makes automating the process even easier.

Slugs for Latest Major
A long time issue for users has been keeping up with point releases, i.e. the centos-7.2 box stops getting updates because centos-7.3 is out. In order to alleviate some of this pain and be consistent with other drivers like kitchen-dokken, we’re now creating a major slug in the form of centos-7 which will map to whatever the latest release of centos-7.x. Some platforms, like Ubuntu and Fedora, already used this naming format.
