Installation problems ubuntu 12.04

Hey Chefs,

Having an issue getting chef server installed in EC2 on Ubuntu 12.04

I install the 11.0.10 debiain package with the dpkg -i command.

And when I run chef-server-ctl reconfigure, the installation attempt
aborts with the following message:

=== Testing Environment ===
Config File:
/var/opt/chef-server/chef-pedant/etc/pedant_config.rb
HTTP Traffic Log File:
/var/log/chef-server/chef-pedant/http-traffic.log

Running tests from the following directories:
/opt/chef-server/embedded/service/chef-pedant/spec/api
Ruby? Erlang? true
/usr/bin/chef-server-ctl: line 30: 4346 Killed
/opt/chef-server/embedded/bin/omnibus-ctl chef-server
/opt/chef-server/embedded/service/omnibus-ctl $@

I was wondering if I could have some tips on how to troubleshoot this.
Really would appreciate any advice anyone may have.

Thanks!
Tim

Is this on a micro instance?

This line here:

/usr/bin/chef-server-ctl: line 30: 4346 Killed /opt/chef-server/embedded/bin/omnibus-ctl chef-server /opt/chef-server/embedded/service/omnibus-ctl $@

looks like something sent a SIGKILL to that process, which could be the oomkiller if you were running low on RAM.

Hi there,

Is this on a micro instance?

Yes, it is. I'm guessing miros are too underprovisioned to run chef server?

Thanks
Tim

You might be able to squeeze it in, if you disable the webui and tune the Solr/JVM RAM allocation way down. I’ve heard reports of people trying to use micro instances but I don’t know if anyone has actually succeeded, so it could be that you just can’t tune Solr’s RAM down far enough. Using a beefier box will be a much happier path.

Ok, cool! Thanks for the info. Probably going to take the 'beefier box'
route.

Best!
