I wrote a knife plugin called kitchen-scribe (
https://rubygems.org/gems/kitchen-scribe) for managing chef configuration
(environments, roles and nodes) as a command-line alternative to the web
console.
It allows you to prepare change-sets without editing big JSON objects,
apply them to specific nodes/environments/roles using the search API, and
track changes to your setup with git. You can find all the documentation on
the github page (https://github.com/khozlov/kitchen-scribe).
