Applicability to AWS WorkSpaces

Before I go too far down the rabbit hole, I was interested to know if anyone in the group has had experience with using Chef for post-provisioning in an AWS WorkSpaces workspace. Amazon provides its own configuration tool, “WAM” (WorkSpaces Application Management)… does Amazon force you to use this? Or can Chef be used as a replacement for it? An obvious desire for anyone is to avoid proprietary solutions, and thus we’d much rather use Chef than Amazon WAM for configuring AWS WorkSpaces based developer environments. If anyone has attempted to use Chef in the context of AWS WorkSpaces, we’d appreciate your sharing of any lessons-learned. Many thanks! -Pete
