The latest version for Ubuntu is more than 6 years old with Ubuntu 18.04. This operating system has been EOL on April 30, 2023. It is now October 2024. So my question: Is Chef Infra OSS no longer supported, as there has not been an update for 6 years, and extremely old operating systems past EOL are listed. The last version of this is 12.19.31.
The RedHat/CentOS similarly is showing only deprecated operating systems with CentOS 7 (now disbanded project).
the code base is OSS but the builds and supported Operating systems for those builds are not opensource as in free and requires a licensed agreement to use. Since the code is OSS you are free to compile and create your own build from it to support the OS of your choice.
There is an Open Source fork/distribution named "cinc" that is building packages. Of course, with zero support and no commercial offerings. It's a tough topic. Chef is a huge project and the company needs to make some money to recoup the investment and operating expenses. On the other side, hobbyists and very small companies will probably never try it.
@Roland_Moriz I am familiar with Cinc but chose not to mention it to avoid potential discomfort or conflict. After Chef ceased producing open-source packages, interest in their platform significantly declined. I have struggled to find relevant articles or discussions about Chef after 2015, which coincides with this decision. It almost seems as though the company intentionally undermined its own product and revenue stream.
