How can I get a copy of the archives of this list?
I e-mailed the published list owner (Nathan Haneysmith chef-request@lists.opscode.com) a few days ago, but haven’t
received a response. I would like to be able to search and browse
the archives using my MUA instead of the MHonArc Web interface. I
don’t see any “download archive” option on Opscode’s site, and a
spin through various Sympa and MHonArc docs suggests I’m not going
to get it straight from the list management software.

I forwarded your email to Nathan directly.
I usually use google to search the archives, e.g.
"site:lists.opscode.com whyrun"
There was some movement toward Google Groups a while ago but it seems
to have died out.

Yup, the inability to easily export the archives and the ease of search are the two primary motivators in our plan to move off of Sympa. When we do make the cutover, we will be taking the archives from Sympa and importing them to another service that would allow for nice things like downloading the entire archive and easier search of the history.
In short, "no simple way to do this currently, and we plan to fix that."
