Just tried an upgrade of my current chef10 nodes (one for starter) all
i did was removing the old chef10 rpms (used rbel repo to install) and
then installed chef 11 rpm. Had to add my own init.d scrip and then
started the service, tada.. it just worked.
The documentation is kinda sparse still around centos/rhel6 and chef11
- no real repo so i cant sync it to my satellite/spacewalk =)

A few more points ->
If the server has an assigned hostname but it doesn't resolve, the install
will fail with mysterious error message.
If there is another web server already running on the server, the pedant
testing will fail in a non-obvious way as well.
I had a server handed to me by my client who had been using it for something
else (hand me down server). They changed the host name on the server, but it
was just a place holder and didn't really exist. I fixed it by adding the
machine IP/hostname to the host file. This is documented here:
http://tickets.opscode.com/browse/CHEF-3837
The second thing I encountered on my hand-me-down server is that someone
already had an httpd service running and I didn't notice until I checked the
nginx logs and found the "address already in use." Pedant was failing with
plain connection reset.
These were easy for me to resolve, but I just wanted to toss them out there
for other things that people can check on.

A few points:
- The server and client versions are not synchronized any more. With Chef
10, we released lots of identical versions of the server just to keep the
version numbers the same, and now that client and server are completely
different codebases there's no reason to keep doing this.
- The omnibus server packages don't start any services by default. Starting
services by default causes lots of people lots of grief, so we chose not to
do it. Post install script leaves you a message to run chef-server-ctl reconfigure
which configures the components and starts the services.

which services were not running?
The web ui had a vulnerability, so it is disabled by default.

Hi Sean,
I installed the RPM but services were not running.
I found this blog post helpful.
But again I have now downgraded to Chef 10.18.0
to configure systems. May be in a weeks time
I will try out with Chef 11.
Thank you,

Hi Ashutosh.
All you need is the RPM. Client and server don't have to match exactly.

Hi,
I went through this link but the server rpm package and
client rpm package version doesn't match.
Server version shows 11.0.4 for Enterprise Linux
version 6 ; which has an rpm named
chef-server-11.0.4-1.el6.x86_64.rpm and Client tab
has chef-11.0.0-1.el6.x86_64.rpm version.
This could lead to problems at later stage.
Just installing the chef rpm is not helping me out.
Have a doubt - On Server - I need to install chef via rpm or gem.
I need to have ruby installed as well, right ?
Am also stuck in setting up a workstation by following this link
Any pointers are appreciated.
Thank you,
