remote_directory preserve permissions?

How do you preserve permissions with the remote_directory resource? If
it can’t be done with remote_directory, is there another resource that
can do a recursive copy and preserve permissions?

Once a cookbook is imported into Chef the items in the files directory no
longer have file permissions and owners per say. If you need to preserve
owners and permissions that vary in a directory structure, I would probably
use tar.
