I have configured my local network using VirtualBox and configured the chef server. I am able to get to the chef server sign up page using web browser but when I sign up I don’t receive any email. I have tried using different email accounts but nothing seems to work. Please help!

I would check to make sure that you have some sort of local mail transfer agent on your machine. Installing Postfix would be a good start. Most Linux distributions don’t seem to have one installed by default these days.

I tried to use mailutils before reading this message and it doesn’t work. I will now try to install postfix and see if that works!
