There isn’t really a way because your existence in a mailing list is a permanent matter of public record. You can disable email notifications in your preferences which is the Discourse equivalent of unsubscribing. Hope that helps!

I do not believe it is my fault for believing the e-mail list I subscribed
to years ago (and unsubscribed from many, many months ago) should act like
a mailing list. I should be able to leave it’s membership. If you want to
start a new thing that isn’t a mailing list (but that has an e-mail
gateway), feel free. But it’s not a mailing list, it’s a bulletin board
with an e-mail gateway that kinda acts like a mailing list but isn’t.
If the bulletin board acts poorly if I want to no longer be a part of it
(and, as an aside, I indicated that when I unsubscribed from the original
chef list quite a while ago, but let’s not argue and bicker about who
re-subscribed who) it’s not my problem what the result is to the list.
That’s Discourse’s problem. And they should have designed their software
to deal with that very obvious use case in a graceful manner. And Chef
should have realized that would be an issue.
But that’s all water under the bridge now, eh? Right now I’ll just sit
back and wait for my “Forgot Password” e-mail to arrive. Only been 20
minutes so far. I guess it takes a lot more time to send
a password reset link than to send e-mails.

I’m in the same boat. I managed to log in but the “Delete my account” button is disabled. How do I get this account deleted and ensure all my data is gone?

First, I’m really sorry for all of the messages that have flooded your inbox in the last 18 hours or so. There was a flaw in our migration logic that auto-subscribed people who should not have been subscribed. We have since unsubscribed everyone who was wrongly subscribed to alerts.
