Hello from Habitat!

  • Core-plans team onboarding
  • Continued work on August core-plans refresh
  • Moving builder onto an up to date rust tool chain
  • Investigating building habitat for M1

Chef Infra Client

tas50 shared

Hey folks there aren't a ton of new updates for the client team this week

We're still working on moving client.pem files into the Windows Certificate Store. Right now we're doing the knife bootstrap side of this

Work continues on Compliance Phase Phase 2 (yep I said it) which allows shipping all the content in cookbooks

Chef Infra Server

tas50 on behalf of prajakta shared

The team put in some super long hours to get Infra Server 14.8 out the door with PostgreSQL 13

233

Not only does that get onto a version of PG that will be support for the next 4 years, it unlocks a lot of great new functionality

  1. Massive performance and scaling improvements
  2. Native JSON and querying of JSON in columns. I'm super excited to see if this is something we can use in the long term to simplify how we store data and make it easier for users to query node data directly out of the DB. Stay tuned

Right now the team is focusing on some testing work. We're expanding external postgresql integration testing and Supermarket installation testing

We're also starting work on our Elasticsearch upgrade to us onto the latest and greatest there

There's a lot of cookbook cleanup work in flight as well to improve logging and finally kill off the old 'private-chef' term that's sprinkled all over infra server

That's it for Infra Server. I did want to also mention that we're getting close to a Supermarket release. It's been a while and the new team there is crushing it. Here's some heavy WIP release notes of what's coming. Lots of component upgrades and CVE fixes as well as improvements to search. Release Notes · chef/supermarket Wiki · GitHub

And with that I'm done!

  • Add use_promex property to install.rb to support compiling with Prometheus Exporter support
  • jenkins - 9.1.0
  • Added option for jenkins-cli authentication with a credential file
  • openldap - 6.0.0
  • Enable unified_mode for Chef 17 compatibility
  • selinux - 5.0.0
  • Note: With version 5.0.0 the default recipe has been removed
  • Major refactoring
  • Restore support for Debian based distros
  • All resources now use unified_mode
  • Added selinux_boolean resource
  • Remove attributes and default recipe
  • Replaced with a set of bare recipes for the three selinux states
  • Add automatic restart function to selinux_state resource

Auto-release terraform is almost there and just needs a little testing to progress to a point where we can delete the existing cluster and migrate. We're hoping to make that work next week.

We also fixed a small bug in our automation. You'll likely see a minor patch release on all the cookbooks soon that resolve that as well. We're also updating our notification bot so it doesn't spam #announcements for minor automated fixes before I do that!

Cinc Updates

ramereth shared

Hello from the Cinc Project! Cinc Server

  • Resolved the run-time issues with 14.6.32 related to chef-utils gem
  • Now working on resolving some testing issues and compilation issues
  • Will work on 14.7 and 14.8 once the remaining issues with 14.6 are resolved

Cinc Client

  • Released 16.14.1

Cinc Workstation

  • Released 21.7.545 and 21.8.555

Finally resolved some build issues that we were having (joy of bundler version differences and docker bugs)

I also took an initial look at building our rebuild of Automate (Dashboard). I'm going to need to do a lot of reading up on Habitat it seems...
