Welcome to Discourse!

Hello!

The time has come to say good bye to lists.opscode.com!

As part of RFC-28, we are now moving the Chef mailing lists over to Discourse at http://discourse.chef.io.

Login, update your preferences, take a look around and let us know what you think!

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Summit starting with Happy Hour soon at Chef HQ.

Thanks,
Nathen

Excellent news! Glad to be moved to a more modern platform. I really like Discourse.

So how do we delete the accounts that you have helpfully pre-created for us without our permission? The delete button in my profile seems to be disabled?

And now the delete button has vanished altogether!

Apparently it’s a “feature” of this software (https://meta.discourse.org/t/leaving-a-forum-deleting-your-own-account/10732) that you can only delete an account if you have one post or less, and replying to this gave me a second post which made my account undeletable! Except it wasn’t deleteable anyway because I got the “blocked” cursor whenever I went over the button.

On top of which I can’t change my username because another “feature” is that you can only do that in the first three days (https://meta.discourse.org/t/how-to-enable-users-to-change-their-username/19186) and because the account was created for me back in July I am now out of time and stuck with the idiotic one you chose for me!

I’m a little surprised at the lack of “delete account” option, or at least “disable account” :frowning: While I’ve adjusted the default options to get rid of notifications, it was a bit surprising to suddenly get a bunch of emails from chef/discourse.

So how do delete this account that I do not want? There is no provision
on your site to do so. Nice job at really screwing this up.

Just adding my voice to everyone else concerned about being signed up for this platform without permission. Big mistake.

Well, I’m old school – and still prefer a listserv to “yet another site I have to log in to.”

Oh man and replying to this replies all. Nice.

Ha, very first thing I did was turn off all the emails

Hi,

It was certainly surprising, especially as I unsubscribed back in September from the original mailing list!

I'd love to be able to change my username.

I do not appear to have an account in this system yet I am getting notifications, and am unable to unsubcribe. What’s going on?

You probably do - what the initial email didn’t tell was that anybody who had previously posted to the mailing lists got an account automatically.

Just try and sign in with your email and use the lost password option to get a link emailed to you so you can access the account.

Interesting to see everyone getting so hyper-cranky about this.

It’s not like it came out of the blue. I saw a post or two about this a
WHILE ago (months?)

If you had issues with it you could very easily have removed yourself from
the list.

Ditto. I just want to unsubscribe ALL.

Well I didn’t, but that as the mailing list was more or less unusable due to being run by some mad software that added endless lists of Re: prefixes to every subject I can’t say I followed it in any detail.

I know there was an abortive attempt to move to different mailing lists software a few months ago but the email this evening was the first I had heard of a move to a web forum.

In fact I just looked at the mailing list folder, and in the whole of this year I see no messages with discourse or forum in the subject.

Migrating away from our legacy mailing list has been in the works for some time. As part of that process, we’ve migrated over the entire archive of old messages as well as the user accounts in order to make this process as seamless as possible for all subscribers.

The new platform does not allow for the easy deletion of accounts that were part of the migration process though so you have a couple of options:

You may login to http://discourse.chef.io to disable all notifications for your account. This will prevent any emails from being sent to you. If that’s not quite enough, you may also change the email in your account profile to something that is gibberish.

I’m sorry to hear that you dislike the new mailing list.

Feel free to contact me directly with any additional feedback you may have.

Thanks,
